Business Advocacy Breakfast Series: The Effect of Legalization of Marijuana on the Workplace

Join the Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce Business Advocacy Committee for the second in a series of Business Advocacy Breakfasts.

Breakfast is being sponsored by The Hemp Mill at Innovation Mill featuring heart healthy hemp products.

Virginia’s new law legalizing marijuana for recreational use has employers wondering what kind of adjustments they need to make. How should companies update policies and practices to address marijuana use off the clock—including drug testing? How can employers determine how high is too high?

The following topics will be addressed:

  • What the new law does and does not do
  • Marijuana use and the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Drug testing and workplace policies
Learning Objectives:
After this session, attendees should be able to:
  1. Evaluate how the new law will affect their workplace.
  2. Explain how drug addiction and medical marijuana use are covered by the ADA.
  3. Create a plan to update policies and procedures as needed to comply with new marijuana law.

Presenters Biographical Information

Agnis C. Chakravorty
Labor & Employment Practice
Agnis Chakravorty is a member of Woods Rogers’ Labor and Employment practice group where he counsels employers on human resources issues including non-compete agreements, employee handbooks, and company reorganization. His experience extends to litigation and dispute resolution, as well as local government and agency work. Agnis worked on model noncompetition agreements for a Fortune 500 company covering employees nationwide, drafted a handbook for one of Virginia’s largest contractors, and helped one of Virginia’s largest private medical practices reorganize its operations. In addition, he has written precedent-setting employee/employer relations legislation at the state level. This legislation now protects small and large businesses from frivolous lawsuits.

Patrick Bolling
Labor & Employment Practice
Patrick Bolling is a Labor & Employment attorney in Woods Rogers’ Lynchburg office. In collaboration with human resource professionals and company leaders, he helps his clients make employment decisions, design and implement fair and effective employment policies, contracts, and handbooks, conduct workplace investigations, and prevent disputes from becoming litigation. Patrick’s additional experience in transactional business matters allows him to offer depth and context to decision-makers beyond employment issues.

The event will be held at The American Legion, Post 3. Space will be limited and current COVID safety guidelines will be followed.
